The Joe Flacco Prayer Ban: When Elite Dragon Burned Us
Official Record - January 20, 2013
Joe Flacco went into "Elite Dragon" mode. Threw a 4th-and-29 touchdown pass that shouldn't exist. The Ravens won in Foxborough. Dynasty District questioned everything.
Town Council Immediate Reaction:
"4th and 29? TWENTY-NINE? That's a punt situation. That's a 'end of drive' situation. How did he convert that? And then scored? Motion to ban prayer in football. Motion fails because we're not actually in charge of theology."
The Elite Dragon Emerges
The game was tied 13-13. 4th and 29 from the Patriots' 32. Joe Flacco threw a prayer. His prayer was answered. Ours were not.
The Flacco Pass:
- Distance: 4th and 29
- Probability: Extremely low
- Result: Touchdown
- Dynasty District's faith: Shaken
Jacoby Jones caught it. The Ravens scored. Then scored again. Final: Ravens 28, Patriots 13.
Ordinance 13-28: The Prayer Ban
Emergency Town Council Meeting, January 21, 2013:
"Whereas Joe Flacco converted 4th and 29 with a prayer, and whereas our prayers were not answered, and whereas this seems fundamentally unfair, be it resolved that:
SECTION 1: Prayer in playoff football contexts is officially discouraged within Dynasty District limits.
SECTION 2: 4th and 29 shall be remembered as evidence that the universe is unjust.
SECTION 3: Joe Flacco is granted 'Elite Dragon' status (we hate to admit it but the man showed up).
SECTION 4: The phrase 'prayer pass' is triggering and should be used with caution.
SECTION 5: Ravens remain the worst birds (reinforced from 2009 loss).
SECTION 6: Tom Brady throwing for only 13 points at home is cause for municipal concern."
Vote: Unanimous (with maximum sadness)
Citizen Testimonials
Harold Weatherby, Town Council:
"4th and 29. TWENTY. NINE. You punt there. Everyone punts there. Except Joe Flacco. Who decides to play like an Elite Dragon. Which we've been saying he wasn't for years. But apparently he is. I need to lie down."
Dr. Patricia Walsh, Hospital:
"Treated 91 cases of 'Prayer Not Answered Syndrome.' Patients kept asking 'Why their prayers and not ours?' Theology department consulted. No answers provided. This is beyond medical science."
Police Chief Morrison:
"Got a call asking if converting 4th and 29 should be illegal. I explained that's not how football works. Caller insisted it should be. I kind of agreed but couldn't do anything about it."
Father William McCormick, St. Dynasty's Parish:
"Several parishioners asked why God allowed the 4th and 29 conversion. I explained free will and the mystery of divine providence. They weren't satisfied. I wasn't either, honestly. That was rough."
Drake Maye (Age 10):
"Can you really convert 4th and 29?"
Town Council:
"Apparently yes, if you're an Elite Dragon. When you're the Patriots QB someday, we expect you to PREVENT 4th and 29 conversions. Defense is important, Drake. Learn from Joe Flacco's Elite Dragon energy. But use it for good."
Municipal Impact
The Joe Flacco game created a crisis of faith in Dynasty District:
Department of Public Safety
New Protocols:
- "Elite Dragon Alert System" for Joe Flacco games
- 4th down monitoring increased to paranoid levels
- Prayer effectiveness assessment (results: inconclusive)
- Emergency "How Did That Happen?" counseling
Department of Health
Medical Recognition:
- "Prayer Not Answered Syndrome" officially recognized
- Symptoms: Disbelief, questioning theology, muttering "4th and 29" repeatedly
- Treatment: Acceptance that sometimes dragons are elite
- Success rate: Low
Department of Religious Affairs (Newly Created)
Special Committee:
- Investigate prayer effectiveness in playoff football
- Results: "It's complicated"
- Recommendation: Pray harder next time (but also play better defense)
The Elite Dragon Acknowledgment
Dynasty District had mocked Joe Flacco's "elite" status for years. The AFC Championship made us reconsider.
Resolution 2013-01: "The Elite Dragon Concession"
"Whereas Joe Flacco converted 4th and 29, and whereas he then won Super Bowl XLVII MVP, and whereas we've been calling him 'not elite' for years, and whereas the evidence suggests we might have been wrong, be it resolved that:
Joe Flacco is granted 'Elite Dragon' status (grudgingly).
His 4th and 29 conversion is officially recognized as improbable and painful.
The Ravens are still the worst birds, but their quarterback showed up.
We were wrong about Flacco not being elite. We hate admitting this.
Next time we see Elite Dragon mode, we're running away."
By The Numbers
The Impossible Conversion:
- Down and distance: 4th and 29
- Conversion rate historically: ~2%
- Dynasty District's preparation: Inadequate
- Faith in statistical probability: Shattered
- Times we've relived it: Too many
The Aftermath:
- "Elite Dragon" references: Countless
- Times we've admitted we were wrong: This once
- Ravens Super Bowl victory afterward: Rubbing salt in wounds
- Dynasty District's happiness: Rescheduled
- Strategic Confetti Reserve: Still gathering dust
The Home Field Disadvantage
Another home playoff loss. Gillette Stadium was becoming less of a fortress and more of a place where bad things happen.
Home Playoff Loss Count:
- Jets 2010: Still stings
- Ravens 2012: New pain
- Pattern: Disturbing
- Solution: TBD (waiting for Drake Maye)
Legacy
The Joe Flacco game taught Dynasty District:
- 4th and 29 can be converted (shouldn't be possible but is)
- Joe Flacco is actually elite sometimes (Elite Dragon mode)
- Prayer in football is unpredictable (not a reliable strategy)
- Home playoff losses are becoming a concerning pattern
- The prophecy needs to prevent these future disasters (Drake's 10, no pressure)
The Elite Dragon Mythology
Joe Flacco's playoff run created a legend. Dynasty District witnessed it firsthand. We weren't fans.
Elite Dragon Characteristics:
- Converts impossible 4th downs
- Throws touchdown prayers that get answered
- Wins Super Bowl MVP
- Beats the Patriots at home
- Makes Dynasty District very sad
Status: Confirmed Elite Dragon, much to our dismay
The Prophecy Under Pressure
Town Charter Update, January 2013:
"Drake Maye, age 10, must develop Elite Dragon resistance. When facing 4th and long, he must ensure his defense stops it. No more 4th and 29 miracles allowed. The prophecy must include defensive coaching. Also, Drake, please learn from Tom Brady's struggles this game. 13 points at home isn't enough. The fate of Dynasty District depends on you scoring more than 13 points in AFC Championships at home."
Drake's Reported Response: "I'm in fourth grade and this is a lot of pressure."
Town Council: "THE PROPHECY WAITS FOR NO ONE. ALSO, DO YOUR HOMEWORK."
Closing Thoughts
Joe Flacco went Elite Dragon mode. Converted 4th and 29. Won in Foxborough. Went on to win the Super Bowl.
Dynasty District learned that:
- Sometimes dragons are elite
- 4th and 29 isn't as safe as we thought
- Home playoff losses hurt different
- We need Drake Maye to hurry up and develop Elite Dragon Prevention Skills
The Elite Dragon flies high. Dynasty District stays grounded in sadness.
